White Label vs Private Label CBD: Which One You Actually Need

The two phrases get used as if they mean the same thing, and they do not. Choosing between them decides who controls the formula, how fast you can launch, how much you have to commit to, and what you actually own at the end. It is worth ten minutes before you send the first enquiry.

White label: an existing product, your brand on it

White label means the manufacturer has already developed and tested a product, and sells it to several brands who each put their own name on it. You are buying a finished formulation and a supply chain. What you control is the label, the packaging and the positioning; what you do not control is the recipe.

The trade-off is speed against distinctiveness. You can be selling in weeks rather than quarters, with a product that already has production history behind it — but a competitor can, in principle, be selling the same oil under a different name.

Private label: a product built to your brief

Private label means the product is developed for you: your concentration, your carrier oil, your flavour profile, your pack format. The formulation is yours in a way a white-label product never is.

It costs more, it takes longer, and it usually carries a higher commitment per product, because the manufacturer is running something that exists only for you. In exchange you get a range nobody else can list.

The four questions that actually decide it

1. Do you have a formulation opinion? If you cannot name a thing you would change about an existing oil, you are describing a white-label buyer. A brief that is only «we want it to be ours» is not a brief.

2. How fast do you need to be on shelf? Launch dates decide this more often than anything else.

3. What volume can you actually move? Private label carries a higher minimum per product, because a bespoke run cannot be sold to anyone else. Be honest with yourself here — it is the single most common reason a first order goes wrong.

4. What are you building? A retailer adding a house line and a brand building a category-leading range are answering different questions, and they should choose differently.

What does not change either way: the paperwork

Whichever route you take, your name goes on the bottle and the questions come to you. Before you commit, ask any supplier the same three things: can you see a certificate of analysis, is it tied to a batch number you can match to stock you receive, and how recent is it? A supplier who cannot answer those quickly is telling you something.

If you have not read one before, our walkthrough is here: How to read a CBD lab report. And know what you are buying before you brand it — broad-spectrum, full-spectrum and isolate are not interchangeable, and the choice changes who you can sell to.

Check the product before your name goes on it

Order samples across the range rather than one flagship. Look for consistency between batches, not just quality in a single bottle. Check that the concentration on the label matches the certificate. Ask what the lead time looks like when you reorder, not when you first order — the second order is where supply chains show their character. Our strength guide covers what the percentages mean in practice.

How Canasity works

We run broad-spectrum oils made in a GMP, ISO 9001:2015 certified facility from US-grown hemp, available Canasity-branded or under your label, with a per-SKU minimum that differs between stocked wholesale and bespoke work. Current terms, tiers and minimums are on the wholesale page, and the white-label route is set out at white label and private label. If you are still deciding what to sell rather than who to buy it from, start at the Learn hub or look at the range in the shop.
