How to Read a CBD Lab Report (COA) — A 5-Minute Guide

CBD certificate of analysis on dark stone with a Canasity CBD oil bottle, gold pen and magnifying glass

Every trustworthy CBD product has one document behind it: the certificate of analysis, or COA. It is issued by an independent laboratory, not the brand, and it answers the only two questions that matter — how much CBD is really in the bottle, and what else came along.

Step 1: Match the batch number

A COA is only meaningful if it belongs to your bottle. Find the batch number printed on your box, and check it against the batch number at the top of the certificate. A generic report with no batch match proves nothing. Every Canasity box carries its batch number — match it on our Lab Reports page.

Step 2: Read the potency panel

The potency section lists measured cannabinoids. Two lines matter most: Total CBD — compare it to the label; a quality product measures at or very close to the stated amount (within the lab’s tolerance) — and Total THC, where you want to see “ND”: not detected*. On a Canasity 40% certificate, for example, you will see the measured CBD in both percent and milligrams, and THC: not detected.

Step 3: Scan the purity panels

This is where cheap oils fail quietly. A complete COA includes panels for pesticides, heavy metals, residual solvents and microbials — each with a clear pass status. Hemp is a bioaccumulator: it pulls up whatever is in its soil. Purity panels are how you know the field was clean.

Step 4: Check who did the testing

The laboratory should be independent and named, with a report date. Canasity batches are tested by an independent accredited laboratory in the United States, and the certificate names the lab, the method and the date.

The red flags

No COA at all. A COA with no batch number. Potency-only reports with no purity panels. Reports older than the product line itself. Any of these means the proof is missing — and with CBD, missing proof is the whole story.

See how our own certificates look on the Lab Reports page, then choose your strength knowing exactly what is inside.

*THC not detected within laboratory quantification limits.
