How to Choose a CBD Oil Manufacturer: 8 Questions to Ask

Choosing a CBD oil manufacturer is a decision a new brand lives with for years. The label can be redesigned and the shop can be rebuilt, but the oil in the bottle is the product your customers come back for, and changing it later means starting that relationship again. Comparing makers on the price of a single bottle tells you very little. The eight questions below tell you far more, and a good partner can answer all of them on the first call.

First, decide what you are buying

“Manufacturer” covers three different arrangements. In white label you put your name on a finished formulation that already exists. In private label you brief a product to your own specification. In a custom build you develop a formulation from scratch. They differ in cost, minimums and time to market, and we compared the first two in white label vs private label CBD. Dropshipping is sometimes added to the list, but a dropshipping supplier ships products it already sells under its own terms; nothing is made under your name. That difference is set out in CBD dropshipping vs white label. Know which arrangement you need before the first call, because it changes the answers to the questions that follow.

1. What exactly will they make under your name?

Ask for the full specification, not just the product name: the type of extract, the strengths on offer, the bottle sizes, the carrier oil and whether a flavour is added. Spectrum comes first, because broad-spectrum, full-spectrum and isolate are different products for different customers. Then look at the strength range. A line with clear steps between strengths is easier to merchandise than a single bottle, and easier to explain on a shelf or a product page.

2. Will the formulation stay the same when you reorder?

Customers buy the same bottle twice only if it is the same oil twice. Ask whether the recipe changes between production runs, who approves a change if one is ever needed, and how you would be told about it. A maker that adjusts the formulation to hit a price can hand you a different product on your third reorder, under a label that promises the same one.

3. How is the minimum order counted?

All makers set a minimum, and the number matters less than how it is counted. Is it per strength, per bottle size, per label design or per order? A minimum counted across the range lets you launch with two strengths; one counted per design can force you to buy volume you do not need yet. Ask too whether the terms change once the first order has sold through. Our own terms, including the current minimum, are kept on the white label CBD oil page so they never go stale in an article.

4. Who handles the label and the box?

A white-label order moves only as fast as its artwork. Ask who designs the label, who checks the artwork against the bottle before anything is printed, who prints it and who applies it. Ask whether outer boxes are available and what you would need to supply for them. The answer you want is a named step where your artwork is checked with you before the first unit is labelled, because a misprint found after delivery costs far more than one found on screen.

5. Where will your stock sit, and how fast will it leave?

For a trade buyer, the warehouse matters as much as the production line. Ask where finished stock is held, whether orders ship from stock or are produced to order, how lead times are confirmed and who arranges and tracks the freight. If you sell inside the European Economic Area, stock held in Europe means shorter transit and fewer surprises on delivery day. Lead times should be confirmed on your quote, before you commit, not discovered after the order is placed.

6. What standards does the facility work to?

Ask which quality standards the production facility holds, and ask to see them in writing. GMP and ISO 9001:2015 are the usual reference points: they show that a documented quality system is in place and maintained. A maker that cannot name its standards, or names them without being able to show them, has answered the question.

7. Who invoices you, and in what currency?

Sourcing through several companies, with one making the oil, another holding the stock and a third sending the invoice, means three sets of terms and three places for a problem to hide. Ask who your single counterparty is, which currency you are invoiced in and how payment works. For a buyer inside the EU, one supplier invoicing in euros keeps the paperwork and the exchange-rate risk off your desk.

8. What happens after the first order?

Any supplier makes an effort on the first order; the reorders show you the partner. Ask how quickly the team answers trade enquiries, how reorders are placed, whether samples are available before a first purchase order, and what support you get for selling online: product data, packshots and descriptions you can use on your own pages. A maker that has thought about your second year has usually thought hard about your first order too.

The eight questions on one page

  • What exactly will you make under my name: extract, strengths, bottle sizes, carrier oil?
  • Will the formulation stay the same when I reorder, and who approves a change?
  • How is the minimum order counted, and do the terms change after the first order?
  • Who designs, checks, prints and applies the label?
  • Where is stock held, and how are lead times confirmed?
  • Which quality standards does the facility hold, and can I see them?
  • Who invoices me, and in which currency?
  • How are reorders, samples and online-selling support handled?

How Canasity works

We supply finished broad-spectrum CBD oil in five strengths, in 10 ml and 30 ml bottles, either under the Canasity name to trade buyers or under your own label as white label. The oil is made in a GMP, ISO 9001:2015 and FDA-registered facility, and we do not alter the recipe per order, so the oil you reorder is the oil you launched with. Stock is held in and dispatched from our European warehouse to trade customers inside the EEA, with one invoice in euros. You can see the range in our shop, read our wholesale terms if you would rather stock the Canasity brand, or see how CBD wholesale in Europe works with us. If you are comparing manufacturers for a first label, send the enquiry form on the white label page with your sales channel and rough volume, and we will answer these eight questions for your brand.
